Betsy Music Residency


DESCRIPTION

A one-week residency in which Roadside Theater comes to your community, college, or high school and mount a production of Betsy using a local actor as the narrator and your local musicians as the jazz band, performing with Roadside.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Enthusiastic, accomplished musicians for the jazz band
  • Can be at the high school, college, or adult level
  • A music teacher or jazz band director willing to teach and rehearse the Betsy musical score with local musicians in advance of the residency and during the residency week
  • A talented local actor to play the role of Narrator
  • A rehearsal space for pre-residency rehearsals
  • A performance space with good acoustics and general theatrical lighting that is available for residency
    week rehearsals and performances
  • Acoustics may need to be supported by a sound system

RESIDENCY TIMELINE
Prior to residency

  • Musical score, script, and sound recording are sent to teacher/jazz band director
  • Roadside conducts phone consultation with teacher/jazz band director
  • Musicians/students learn the musical score by residency week
  • Local actor learns Narrator’s part by residency week

Residency Week

  • Day 1
    • Beegie Adair meets with the teacher/jazz band director to coordinate the coming week
  • Day 2
    • Ms. Adair rehearses local musicians, and Roadside and Ms. Adair are available to teach master classes
  • Day 3
    • Ms. Adair rehearses local musicians, and Roadside and Ms. Adair are available to teach master classes
  • Day 4
    • Design and technical set-up
    • Rehearsal & staging with local musicians and actor, Roadside director, Ms. Adair, and two
      Roadside musician/actors
  • Day 5
    • Technical run-through and dress rehearsal
  • Day 6
    • Final rehearsal
    • Performance
  • Day 7
    • Reflection on process with teacher/jazz band director, local artists, and Roadside
    • Performance
