Story Circles

Roadside Theater frequently uses Story Circles in its community cultural residencies because they can effectively spark a community's memory of its history and facilitate conversations across generational, racial, and class lines about community issues.

A Story Circle is a small group of people (5-20) sitting in a circle so each person can see everyone else, telling stories or remembrances, facilitated by a Story Circle leader. It is a social event, often preceded or followed by a potluck dinner or a dessert reception. Each Story Circle has a stated purpose and often a stated theme. Story Circles, as conducted by Roadside, emphasize that multiple truths exist and that listening is as important as telling. Stories emerge from the participants' personal experiences lending fact, nuance, and emotion to the collective event.
