Teaching at Colleges and Universities
August
through December 2002, Roadside Theater taught the course, "Story
to Stage: Exploring Grassroots Theater", at the University of
Virginia's College at Wise. Through creating performances from story
and studying the principles of grassroots theater, students learned
to distinguish the principles of grassroots theater from other theater
and understand how these principles and their complementary methodologies
shape all aspects of grassroots theatrical practice, including content,
performance styes, stage design, management, and marketing. From
the Ground Up, the course text, is available for purchase
from Roadside.
From 1990 to 1993, at Cornell University, Roadside developed and
taught a course in popular theater and playwriting and hosted, with
Cornell, a national symposium on popular theater. From the Ground
Up, in its second printing, is the
90-page report from the symposium. Roadside has further developed
the course at the College of William and Mary, Arizona State University,
the University of Akron, and now at the University of Virginia's
College at Wise.
